☆ Whitey Herzog, Hall of Fame Cardinals Manager, Dies at 92

Whitey Herzog, the Hall of Fame manager who led the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series championship in the 1980s, died on Monday in St. Louis. He was 92 and had been the second-oldest Hall of Famer after Willie Mays. “Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it,” Herzog liked to say. Signed by the Yankees in 1949, he never made it out of their minor league system, though he picked up a lifetime of baseball knowledge from Manager Casey Stengel at spring training camps. He played the outfield for four American League teams over eight seasons with only modest success.

In New York City, where space is at a particular premium, the possibilities of reusing street space have fueled recent policy debates over outdoor dining, bus lanes, trash pickup, public space and street vendors. Cincinnati used Covid recovery money to close streets and help scores of businesses open outdoor dining patios. For most of the history of the American city, streets were multipurpose public spaces. But they were also used as impromptu forums for markets, festivals, trash disposal, storage, everyday socializing and children’s games. Yet private cars rule the road, occupying most of the city’s public space, polluting its air and slowing ambulances, buses, mail delivery and other vital services.

Tom Simpson started his collecting career with a pack of baseball cards in Meigs, Ga., in the 1950s. They came in wax packs—five cards plus a slab of Pepto-Bismol pink bubble gum. A nickel bought you a trip to collector nirvana if a Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays card appeared. Sadly, the baseball cards of his youth were destroyed or lost. But rather than try to rebuild his old card collection, Mr. Simpson has, over the ensuing years, created a trove of sports, music and other types of memorabilia that he has arrayed throughout the 25,000-square-foot property he shares with his wife, June Simpson, in Thonotosassa, Fla., outside Tampa.

Hall wasn’t on the Phillies’ roster for any of the first three rounds this postseason and isn’t expected to be on the World Series roster. Many Afro Latino players embrace Black identity, yet perhaps not for the same reasons that Black U.S. players do.
